IRS $1,400 Stimulus Payment Scam Alert: Beware of these Messages Amid Rising Inflation

With inflation driving up the cost of living, many Americans are looking for financial relief.

To help, the IRS is issuing automatic payments of up to $1,400 to nearly one million taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns.

No action is required—if you're eligible, the IRS will send the payment automatically.

However, scammers are taking advantage of this by sending fake IRS text messages asking for personal information to "process" the payment. Do not fall for it.

How Does the IRS Payment Work?

  • The IRS is automatically sending payments to eligible taxpayers.
  • If you qualify, the money will be directly deposited or sent as a check based on your latest tax return.
  • You do not need to apply, call, or provide personal information.

How Scammers Are Targeting People

Scammers are impersonating the IRS and sending text messages like this:

"You are eligible to receive an economic impact payment of $1,400. Please provide your accurate personal information. We will deposit the amount into your bank account or send you a paper check within 1 to 2 business days."

These messages are fraudulent and designed to steal your personal and financial data.

Red Flags to Watch For:

  • Texts, emails, or calls from “IRS” asking for personal details
  • Links to fake IRS websites
  • Urgent requests to act immediately

How to Protect Yourself

  • Ignore and delete suspicious messages—the IRS never contacts taxpayers via text or email for payments.
  • Check your payment status at IRS.gov if you’re unsure.
  • Report scams to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov and to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at tigta.gov.

Bottom Line

If you're eligible for the IRS $1,400 payment, you don’t need to do anything—it will be sent automatically. Never share your personal information via text, email, or phone.
