September 2026 Benefits Guide: When Social Security, SSI and SNAP Payments Arrive
Millions of Americans will receive Social Security, SSI or SNAP benefits in September 2026. Social Security and SSI follow a federal schedule, while SNAP (food assistance) is paid by each state on its own timeline, typically between September 1 and September 28.
These payments help cover rent, groceries, utilities, prescriptions and other essentials. Below is a concise guide to September’s payment dates, SNAP maximum amounts and what to do if a deposit is late.
Social Security and SSI: September 2026 payment dates
The Social Security Administration uses a fixed monthly calendar. SSI is paid on the first of the month. Most retirement, survivor and SSDI payments are sent on Wednesdays, based on the beneficiary’s birthday.
| Payment date | Who gets paid |
|---|---|
| Tuesday, September 1 | SSI recipients |
| Thursday, September 3 | People who started Social Security before May 1997, and people who receive both SSI and Social Security |
| Wednesday, September 9 | Social Security recipients born on the 1st–10th |
| Wednesday, September 16 | Social Security recipients born on the 11th–20th |
| Wednesday, September 23 | Social Security recipients born on the 21st–31st |
Example: An SSDI recipient born on the 18th would normally receive their September payment on Wednesday, September 16. A retiree born on the 25th would be paid on Wednesday, September 23.
The September 3 payment is not birthday-based. It applies to early claimants (before May 1997) and to people who receive both SSI and Social Security. Those dual recipients get SSI on September 1 and their Social Security payment on September 3.
SSI in October and December 2026: Two payments, no bonus
SSI recipients will see two deposits in October and again in December 2026. Neither is an extra payment. SSA pays the next month’s SSI early whenever the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday.
| SSI payment date | Benefit month covered | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| October 1, 2026 | October | Regular first-of-month payment |
| October 30, 2026 | November | November 1 is on a Sunday |
| December 1, 2026 | December | Regular first-of-month payment |
| December 31, 2026 | January 2027 | January 1 is New Year’s Day (federal holiday) |
There is no separate November SSI payment; November’s benefit is the October 30 deposit. January 2027’s SSI benefit is paid on December 31, 2026.
Budgeting note
The October 30 payment must cover November expenses, and the December 31 payment is intended for January 2027. These are calendar adjustments only and do not increase your monthly SSI amount or change eligibility. You can confirm your exact dates in your my Social Security account or on the SSA payment calendar.

September SNAP maximum benefits (FY 2026)
For the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., Fiscal Year 2026 SNAP maximums apply through September 30. Households receive the full maximum only if their countable income is very low; most get a reduced amount after deductions.
| Household size | Maximum monthly SNAP benefit |
|---|---|
| 1 person | $298 |
| 2 people | $546 |
| 3 people | $785 |
| 4 people | $994 |
| 5 people | $1,183 |
| 6 people | $1,421 |
| 7 people | $1,571 |
| 8 people | $1,789 |
| Each additional person | +$218 |
Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands use different maximums.
SNAP generally reduces the maximum by about 30% of a household’s net income. For example, a four-person household with $1,000 in countable net income might receive around $694 instead of the full $994. Your official benefit notice or state SNAP office shows your exact amount.
Note: Maximum SNAP amounts increase on October 1, 2026, as the new federal fiscal year begins. A family of four’s maximum will rise from $994 to $1,023, with similar increases for other household sizes.
What to do if a payment is late
-
Social Security, SSI or SSDI: First check your bank or Direct Express account. SSA recommends waiting up to three additional mailing days before reporting a missing payment. You can also review your expected dates in your my Social Security account.
-
SNAP: Check your EBT balance and online benefits account. Look for any notices about recertification, missing documents or changes in income or household size. If your payment has not arrived after your state’s expected window, call the number on the back of your EBT card or contact your local SNAP office.
