Check Your Bank: IRS Sends $2,600 Refunds to Millions Battling Rising Costs

As inflation and soaring prices continue to strain American households, the IRS is providing much-needed financial relief through tax refunds averaging $3,271 this 2025 tax season — a 5.2% increase over last year.

For many, these refunds are helping cover rising utility bills, groceries, and everyday expenses.

According to the IRS, more than 70 million taxpayers have already filed their returns as of March 14, 2025.

While the number of returns is slightly lower than in 2024, the total amount refunded so far exceeds $162.99 billion, with most funds delivered via direct deposit.

Average Refunds Climb — Providing Relief Against Inflation

  • The average direct deposit refund this season is $3,330, up 4.8% from last year.

  • Many taxpayers are receiving between $2,600 to higher amounts, offering critical support for utility bills, groceries, rent, and other rising living costs.

With inflation continuing to squeeze budgets, this refund surge is a financial lifeline for millions.

Who Can Expect Their Refund This March?

Taxpayers who filed electronically, requested direct deposit, and submitted an error-free return are likely to see their refunds within 21 days or less.

Here’s the IRS’s estimated direct deposit schedule based on filing dates:

  • Filed March 3 → Deposit by March 24

  • Filed March 4 → Deposit by March 25

  • Filed March 5 → Deposit by March 26

  • Filed March 6 → Deposit by March 27

  • Filed March 7 → Deposit by March 28

  • Filed March 8 → Deposit by March 29

  • Filed March 9 → Deposit by March 30

Use Refunds Wisely Amid Rising Prices

With utility rates, groceries, and rent climbing, the IRS encourages taxpayers to take advantage of direct deposit for faster payments.

These refunds, especially this year, are expected to ease the burden of everyday rising costs for many Americans.

If you haven’t filed yet, filing electronically with direct deposit remains the fastest way to get your money.
