$2.1 Billion Homekey+ Program Builds Permanent Housing for Veterans

Supportive housing projects for veterans in California have reached nearly 75% completion, marking a major step toward addressing homelessness and inflation-driven housing pressures.

The state is developing 707 permanent supportive homes designed to serve veterans and individuals facing homelessness and behavioral health challenges.

This expansion comes at a crucial time, as rising costs and housing shortages continue to impact vulnerable communities, including veterans.

Billions Invested Through Prop 1 for Local Projects

More than $2.1 billion in funding from Proposition 1 (California 2024) is powering the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s Homekey+ program.

This initiative provides local communities with resources to build permanent supportive housing with services, about 50% of which directly benefit veterans.

A Lifeline for Veterans Facing Challenges

The housing units are designed for veterans who may be struggling with mental health issues, traumatic brain injury, or post-traumatic stress disorder.

These conditions often make it more difficult to find and maintain stable housing.

6,561 Affordable Homes Coming Soon

As of October 2025, construction of these housing projects is 75% complete.

Once finished, the initiative will create 6,561 units of affordable and permanent supportive housing.

This program aligns with other veteran benefits in California, including:

  • VA housing assistance and rental support

  • Behavioral health services for veterans

  • Job training and placement programs

Veterans and families seeking housing resources can explore programs at https://www.va.gov/homeless or https://www.cdss.ca.gov.

Bottom Line: California’s investment isn’t just about buildings, it’s about giving veterans a real chance at stability during a time of high inflation and rising costs.

As projects near completion, more veterans will gain access to safe, affordable housing and vital services they need to rebuild their lives.
