What Is the $400 Inflation Rebate Check?

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, this rebate is designed to help New Yorkers cope with the rising cost of living.

Framed as a refund of taxes already paid, the initiative aims to put money back in the pockets of working residents—no strings attached.

You might be missing out on benefits—check what’s available to you here.

Who’s Eligible?

To receive the check, New York State residents must meet all three of the following criteria:

  • Filed Form IT-201, the state’s Resident Income Tax Return

  • Declared income within qualifying limits (see amounts below)

  • Not been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return

If these conditions are met, no further action is required.

Eligible residents will automatically receive the rebate by mail—no additional applications or forms needed.

How Much Will You Receive?

Payment amounts vary based on income level and filing status:

  • $400 – Married couples filing jointly with income up to $150,000

  • $300 – Married joint filers with income between $150,001 and $300,000

  • $200 – Single filers with income up to $75,000

  • $150 – Single filers with income between $75,001 and $150,000

If your household falls within these brackets, you’ll receive a rebate automatically.

When Will Checks Be Sent?

The checks are scheduled to be mailed between August and October 2025.

This timeline gives state officials time to verify eligibility and prepare for mass distribution.

Expect to receive your check by mail—no electronic direct deposit is currently planned.

No Application Needed—But You Must Meet the Basics

If you’ve filed your taxes and meet the basic eligibility rules, your rebate is on the way.

The state is using tax return information to process payments, which means there’s nothing more you need to do—unless your mailing address has changed, in which case you should contact the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

This rebate is a direct response to inflation, and for millions of families and individuals across New York, it’s a welcomed bit of relief during a high-cost year.
