Need Legal Help to Stay Housed? Veterans Can Now Access $42M in Support

A major effort from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is bringing fresh support to veterans at risk of homelessness.
Through the Legal Services for Veterans (LSV) Grant Program, $42 million in funding is now available, but it’s not direct cash assistance.
Instead, the money will be distributed to organizations that provide legal help to veterans facing housing crises or legal barriers to stability.
The goal: reduce veteran homelessness by giving them access to the legal tools and representation they need to stay in or find housing, regain access to benefits, and move forward.
Who Can Apply for the Legal Services Grant?
The LSV grants aren’t for individual veterans; they’re for public and nonprofit organizations that serve veterans.
Eligible groups include:
-
Nonprofit legal aid organizations
-
Tribal governments
-
Local and state governments
-
Faith-based organizations
To be competitive, applicants should offer four or more types of legal services and focus on underserved communities, such as rural or tribal areas.
Organizations must register at SAM.gov and apply through Grants.gov by July 7, 2025, at 4 P.M. ET.
Which Veterans Will Benefit?
The program supports veterans who are currently homeless or at immediate risk, such as those living in shelters, on the streets, or facing eviction.
To qualify for help through an LSV-funded organization, veterans must:
-
Have served in the U.S. military
-
Have a discharge status other than dishonorable
-
Be homeless or at risk of homelessness
What Types of Legal Services Are Covered?
The funding allows organizations to assist veterans with critical legal issues that often block access to stable housing, including:
-
Eviction or landlord disputes
-
Child support or custody cases
-
Discharge status upgrades
-
Defense in minor criminal cases
-
Access to VA disability benefits or health care
-
Domestic violence protection orders
These services are designed to remove the legal obstacles that can prevent veterans from accessing housing, employment, or financial assistance.
